Bible Study Topic:  The Characteristics of A Blessed Man

Part 1

Psalm 1 - King James Version (KJV)

1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

In this study, verses 1-3 are covered…

The first characteristic is that the blessed man does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly.

1)  Who is the “Blessed Man” - (happy, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable)

2)  What does it mean to “walk in the counsel of the ungodly” – (following their advice, their plans and purposes, nor stands (lingers submissively) in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down (to relax, rest, mingle, associate with, chill or hang with) where the scornful and the mockers gather.  (The Blessed Man is mindful of his surroundings and associations.)

3)  Who is the “ungodly” - Irreligious or immoral: "the ungodly lives a life of self-obsession, lust, and pleasure"

The second characteristic is that the blessed man delights in the law of the Lord and he meditates on God’s law day and night.

1)  What does it mean to “delight in the law of the Lord” – (these persons love the Lord’s Instruction; they find joy and peace in the Word of the Lord) and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God)

2)  What does it mean to “meditate on the Law of the Lord, day and night” – (these persons habitually meditate (they ponder and study) to learn and understand the word of the Lord.)  This is a part of their regular routine, not an occasional occurrence.

The third characteristic is that the blessed man shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.

1)  What does it mean to be “planted” – (these people are rooted and grounded in the Lord, bound by faith in God)

2)  Why “planted by the rivers” – (these people try to stay near life giving resources, studying the Bible, attending bible study, church services, independent reading and study time, fellow-shipping with positive, inspiring, and encouraging, people of the same faith and system of belief)

The fourth characteristic of the blessed man who is planted will “bring forth his fruit in his season;

1)  What does it mean to bring for fruit – (to be fruitful… not talking about reproducing physically…but talking about spiritual reproduction); Producing good or helpful results; being productive… Example: The fruit of an orange tree is oranges…but the fruit of the “Christian believer tree” would be more Christian believers.

The fifth characteristic of the blessed man is: his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

1)  What is meant by “his leaf also shall not wither” – (These people, much like the tree planted by the river is not one to be found dry and wilted but it is green, lush and lovely.)  The believer who lives close to God won’t be dry and wilted either.  It doesn’t mean that these people will not have to weather some storms, but God will keep them, as their roots will run deep in the Lord.  These people will be viewed as vibrant, lively and productive.  This will show not only in the spirit, but it will be noticed by many in the natural.

2)  How shall a blessed man prosper at “whatever he does” - prosperity shall attend him wherever he goes, soul-prosperity.  Whatever he does, in conformity to the law of God, shall prosper and may even exceed his thoughts, a little or far above his hopes and expectations.
